Barrett's Oesophagus

This research focuses on the use of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor and proton pump inhibitor drugs (PPIs) for cancer chemoprevention in Barrett¹s. A clinical trial studying the effectiveness of COX-2 inhibitors at lowering COX-2 protein expression in oesophageal tissue has raised the possibility of two new variants of COX-2. This work is being extended with more 2D proteomic investigations being undertaken which will allow confirmation of the previously unidentified proteins. Another functional pharmacoproteomic study is being conducted which is examining proteins in oesophageal tissue from patients treated with PPIs where diseased tissue has regressed with the objective of identifying potentially important diagnostic proteins involved in the pathogenesis of Barrett¹s oesophagus.
