Identification and Apparrel Guidelines

As Pharmacy students on clinical teaching rounds or placements in professional settings, you are required to exhibit a professional appearance in both manner and dress. Rules of professional courtesy and common sense should govern all communication with patients, pharmacy staff and other health professionals. Remember that the reputation of pharmacy and of the particular pharmacy practice depends on the conduct of the people working in that practice. See also: Code of conduct for students on clinical placement with DHHS.

You are expected to be clean, well-groomed and to conform to the requirements set for employees of the pharmacy. A Pharmacy shirt is strongly encouraged for use during practical and clinical placements.

  • NOT SUITABLE: jeans, T-shirts, board shorts, tank tops, trainers and similar casual wear.
  • NECKTIES for males are essential, however some hospitals and pharmacies prefer their staff and students to wear one.
  • REQUIRED: Appropriate necklines, midriff and hemlines.
  • HYGIENE is particularly important on wards and in practice sites generally, for example hand washing is required to enter some wards such as the Cardiac Surgery Unit. Particular attention should be paid to the cleanliness of hands and fingernails.
  • FOOTWEAR should be enclosed in clinical areas.
  • HAIR that is loose should be collar length or else neatly tied back.

Checklist of essentials on placement:
ID badge (see below) placed in a position where it is clearly visible
Long sleeved shirt (an embroidered chambray Pharamcy shirt is available for purchase)
Trousers, tailored shorts, culottes or skirt
Enclosed toe shoes
Learning objectives for the current professional experience placement
Unit workbook

Checklist of optionals on placement:
Jacket or blazer
Cardigan or jumper
Protective clothing such as sterile gowns are not considered to be part of the "uniform" and should only be worn when health care agency procedures dictate.

Mobile phones can only be used in accordance with the relevant health care agency policies. It is inappropriate in a place of work to have your mobile phone turned on during expected hours of work. We strongly advise that your phone is turned off and stored somewhere securely during work hours.

Students are reminded that they are dealing with personal health issues and privacy is paramount.
