Immunisation

FHS Infectious Diseases Policy

y

As pharmacy students do not undertake exposure prone procedures, testing for blood borne viruses is not required. However, pharmacy students are required to comply with the requirements and recommendations for:

  • immunisations and
  • screening for Tuberculosis

Documentation of compliance is required prior to allocation to and student participation in learning placements in health care settings involved with the provision of patient care and/or services.

Documentation of Compliance:

  • student declaration form
  • health care provider declaration form
  • screening of Tuberculosis form
  • compliance recorded in SPMS

The Tasmanian School of Pharmacy strongly recommends that student have their immunisation status up to date before they begin the course. This is for the student's protection and also for the protection of people with whom they will be in contact on clinical teaching rounds and later in their professional career and may thus have both medical and legal implications. Year 1 international students are encouraged to bring the immunisation evidence with them. Alternatively, they can undergo tests here. A serology can be done with an Australian GP to identify what injection students need at the expense of the student. There is no particular fixed time frame, but it is ideal that this be done before Year 2 hospital rounds, preferably by the end of Year 1,  as it is a requirement for undertaking hospital rounds.

The School of Pharmacy recommends that students ensure immunity to the following diseases - advice on immunisation is available from the Student Health Practitioner or your own General Practitioner:

  • diphtheria
  • polio
  • measles
  • mumps
  • rubella
  • tetanus
  • hepatitis B
  • meningitis vaccination

Please remember that immunity for hepatitis B is a lengthy process and students are encouraged to begin the course of vaccines six months before beginning year 3 studies.
